While in Malta director Dave Barton will be conduction classes on Shakespeare at the MADC Clubrooms on three consecutive Sundays, starting Sunday 5th June between 10.30 am and 12.30 pm.
The first class will tackle the text of the plays as well as a brief overview of Shakespeare’s history and people’s misunderstandings or illusions about his work. We will then launch into a discussion of scansion and iambic pentameter in an easy-to-understand way, as well as how to simplify interpretation of the Elizabethan language. A home assignment in the form of translating text into modern day speech will be given as a basis for the following class. On Day/Class Two, participants will read their “translations” followed by an open discussion. The second half of the class would focus on the original text’s poetry and emotion, pronunciation of words and how Shakespeare provides clues on how the work should be performed in the scansion itself. A second assignment will be for participants to prepare a recitation of a selected text and give a competent and meaningful rendition.
A maximum of 20 students will be accepted for these classes on a first come, first served basis. Fees are €40 for MADC members and €50 for non-members.
