Auditions! Auditions! Auditions!

E-mail Print PDF

The MADC has a chock-a-block spectacular season coming up! Hereunder is information for auditions for three productions: Scrooge - A Christmas Panto, Death of a Doornail and The One Act Play Festival.

SCROOGE : A CHRISTMAS PANTO

Written by Alan Montanaro

Directed by Nanette Brimmer

SATURDAY 17TH JULY from 2.00 pm to 6.00 pm (last applications received at 5.00 pm)

Money-loving Ebenezer Scrooge hates Christmas almost as much as he hates people – including MADC audiences. But one Christmas Eve he is visited by the spectre of his ex-partner Jacob Marley and things begin to go bump in the night as he is visited by three ghosts: the Spirit of Christmas Past takes him back to the swinging 60’s where he meets (and loses) the love of his life, the Spirit of Christmas Present shows him the effects he forces upon those people around him, whilst the Ghost of Christmases Yet To Come gives Scrooge a lesson he will not likely ever forget. And, hopefully, neither will our audiences… this is looking like it’s going to be one of the good ones! There are a larger number of characters than usual in this year’s panto as we meet people from different time zones. Casting will be based on acting, singing, dancing, look/presentation and – in some cases – age. Do come prepared for your audition, i.e., with sheet music or backing cd for your song and a short, memorised monologue.  A short dance routine will be taught to you on the spot as per previous years.

CHARACTER LIST:

LES GALS: 3 or 4 ladies who dress similarly – but never the same.  They are the ‘showbiz” element of the show and act as singers and dancers. They are based on the urchins in Little shop of Horrors – or the three “angels’ in Priscilla.

PERRY Cameo role.  To be played by a lead chorus member. Perry’s function is to get the audience going early on in the show. Any age.

SCROOGE:  The hero of the story – we are looking for an experienced actor  with stamina, who can give the character it’s “soul” At once mean and sensitive, the actor should be older, or age convincingly.   This is a singing and dancing role.

BOB CRATCHIT: Principal: Scrooge’s only employee. A hard-working family man with a  loyalty to scrooge in spite of the abuse he receives.  Has a solo song.

Mrs. SCRATCHIT:  Character lead.  This part has been precast and will be played by Isabel Warrington.

TINY TIM:  Cameo Role: Bob Cratchit’s crippled son. To be played by a child.

DAME:   This role is precast and will be played by Alan Montanaro.

Mr. APPLEGATE: Cameo Role: To be played by a chorus member. Applegate is a bumbling man who turns up at scrooge’s office to ask for an extension on his payment.

HARRY (*):  Character lead. Scrooge’s nephew. A young, upbeat and happy man who sees a something in Scrooge that Scrooge doesn’t even see.  (* see Young Scrooge)

MACH A VILLAIN Principal. The real villain of the panto. Scrooge’s legal advisor has ulterior motives. Should be played by a tall, lanky actor.  Has a duet with Scrooge.

BOB MARLEY:  Cameo Role: To be played by a chorus member.  Actor must be able to speak with a convincing Jamaican accent. He addresses the audience for a short speech.

JACOB MARLEY: Character lead.  Scrooge’s deceased partner who appears to him in a somewhat macabre scene. Larger than life character.

YOUNG SCROOGE: Character lead.  A good looking young man, before the love of money turns him into the bitter miser we know and love. He falls in love with the Dame. Must sing well. (*) Should be played by the same actor playing HARRY to keep some sort of family  resemblance going.

DICK:    Cameo Role: To be played by a chorus member. Young     Scrooge’s best friend.

Mr. DIZZIWIG:  Character lead.  Scrooge’s first employer is a 60’s hippy.  He is a free spirit of a man who is perpetually stoned or something.

Mrs DIZZIWIG:  Character lead.  Slightly overweight wife of Mr Dizziwig.

GHOST OF CHRISTMAS PAST: Character lead.  A young female. Should look innocent and pure. One mammoth scene, so could double up as chorus for other scenes.

GHOST OF XMAS PRESENT: Character lead.  Must be played by a larger-than-life  bearded actor with a deep voice.

GHOST OF XMAS YET TO COME: Character lead. A non-speaking part of great  importance.

CHORUS: Victorian town folk, beggars, salesmen, carolers, etc; hippies; demons, etc.

DEATH OF A DOORNAIL
By Lee Mueller

The audience interactive murder-mystery play “Death Of A Doornail”, directed by Coryse Borg and Pia Zammit, will be staged at the Manoel Theatre over Halloween, that is the 30th and 31st October, 2010 in collaboration with Teatru Manoel.

Eccentric Millionaire, Albert Doornale has invited all of his close friends to his estate; including his ex-wife Abigail, his current fiance Candy Bombay, and his childhood friend from the lower East Side, Salvatore Carbone. Everyone arrives at the estate greeted by the grumpy Butler and cutlery-carrying cook. The only problem is, Albert is not there, no one has seen him. Not his nerdy nephew or his socially spoiled daughter. None of the guest have any idea why they are there or what happened to their host. That is until blood is found in the upstairs bathroom. Was Albert killed and carried away? In the nick of time, Inspector Bukowski arrives on the scene. A murder investigation will begin, as soon as a body is found….. It may be a long wait…..

Auditions will be held at the MADC Clubrooms on Friday, 30th July from 6.00pm to 8.00pm (last applications received at 7.30 pm)

There is no need to prepare anything, as auditionees will be asked to sight-read a part of the script (they will have the chance to briefly glance over it before auditioning).
CHARACTER LIST:

Narrator*: Host of the Mystery. Just wants the evening to go smoothly and for everyone in the audience to enjoy the play.

Audience Guy: Thought he was going to a Karaoke evening but has ended up at the Murder Mystery. Most likely sits in a big stuffed chair at home and talks back to the Television.

Audience Guy’s Wife:Tries somewhat to keep her husband under control in public when she can get him to go out. Would like to stay for the play since she probably tricked him into coming.

Edward (the nephew): Typical nerd. Is always up for a good intellectual challenge.

Priscilla: Daughter of Albert Doornale. Born with a silver spoon in her mouth, spoiled rich girl. Accustomed to having everything done for her and having her way.

Candace “Candy” Bambay: Current Girlfriend of Albert Doornale. Very naive in the ways of the wealthy. Wants to fit in.

Mortimer: Typical English style butler. Very dry and unemotional in appearance. A lot smarter and "hipper" than he lets on.

Mrs Morganford:The bored and bitter cook. Carry's around a butcher's knife just in case she needs to cut something.

Salvator Carbone: Albert's childhood friend. Sal's money was earned on the streets with the other Wise Guys.

Abigail Doornale: Ex-wife of Albert. Loved being rich and established and hates not being rich and established. Is in hopes that Albert has invited her to reconcile their marriage.

Inspector Bukowski *: A police inspector who is eager for a big case to fall in his lap. Has not had a "big" case yet. Or even a "medium" case. Has read about big cases. Is quite sure s/he could handle a big case if s/he had one.

Albert Doornail : Eccentric Millionaire who has invited guests to his mansion.

* (Can be played by male or female)

As mentioned, this is an interactive play where the audience participate in the murder mystery and promises to be a real fun experience!

Short and Sweet - An MADC Centenary Initiative

E-mail Print PDF
Interested in acting or directing?   Fancy learning something about getting a script from page to stage?  Feel like trying something new which is not competitive or judgemental but is actually FUN?

MADC members and friends are invited to participate in “Short ‘n Sweet” – an innovative theatrical event.  The core idea is that a group of people interested in acting and directing meet over a weekend (Saturday or Sunday afternoon) to read scripts for monologues, duologues, sketches and short plays (10 minutes or so), discuss how they might be presented and then perform them as rehearsed readings.

All participants will have the opportunity to act, direct and help backstage.  The objectives are to give some insight into all stages of the production process, including play selection and script assessment, interpretation, production management, directing and acting.  There could be some discussion of relationships between directors and actors, actors and actors, actors and backstage teams.   There will also be some focus on production values, e.g. respect for the text, respect for fellow actors, working as an ensemble. The workshop should focus on teamwork and co-operation.  The idea is to have a bit of fun while learning something.

The workshop would be for the benefit of MADC members, but others could participate and be encouraged to become members.  Participation is free on acquiring membership. Old stagers and newcomers are equally welcome.

The first “Short ‘n Sweet” will be held at the MADC Clubrooms during the first weekend in August (probably Sunday 8th) from 2.00 pm to 6.00 pm.  This will be confirmed at a later date.

“Short ‘n Sweet” would be an asset to aspiring actors and directors, especially those who wish to participate in the One-Act Play Festival.  The workshops could be held regularly (e.g. once every three or four months) if there is sufficient demand.
